Why would she want to kill other women? The Mutilated Cutter is the story of a female serial killer who lures women then inseminates them after murdering them. Women in Los Angeles were terrorized by these mass murders and, well, I thought it would be interesting to write a play based on this story with a female lead, a feminist twist. I became interested in his motives and in the women who were being violated. VC: The play was inspired by a man named Kenneth Bianchi, also known as “The Hillside Strangler.” He was getting a lot of media attention at the time. Can you tell me about the plot and what inspired this story? You wrote a play entitled The Mutilated Cutter. I distanced myself from my father as I sought other forms of authority and control.ĪM: I understand that you were primarily interested in pursuing a career as an actress and writer. VC: Yes, he inspired me to be an artist, but as a teenager I lost myself. ![]() I think a lot of women who have violent or criminal tendencies have experienced some form of abuse as children. Veronica Compton: I grew up in Los Angeles, in the Hollywood Hills, with my father who was an artist and I did experience some abuse by a relative, not my father. Can you tell me a bit about your childhood? I read somewhere that you were physically and sexually abused, is this true? It did not take terribly sophisticated police work to link the police report of the woman Veronica tried to strangle with the photo of the lady who created the disturbance in the airport that same afternoon.Amy Mackie: Very little is known about your early life. To make matters irreparably worse, Veronica sent a letter and tape to the Bellingham authorities telling them that they had arrested an innocent man and pointed to the recent strangling attempt to prove that the real culprit was still at large. In a rare lapse into rationality, Veronica decided it was time to go back to California.īut rationality did not overstay its welcome and Veronica, when she arrived at the San Francisco airport, distinguished herself by creating a kind of hysterical disturbance. Veronica lunged at her with a cord and tried to strangle her, but the woman was too strong and threw Veronica over. When she arrived in Bellingham, she had to build up her courage with large amounts of alcohol and cocaine.įinally fortified, Veronica lured a woman into driving her to a motel and coming into the room for a drink. Once Veronica got into this project, it was a bit more intimidating than it seemed in the planning. Kenny packed Veronica off to Washington with a fresh load of his semen in a plastic glove. Kenny was a nonsecretor, which meant in the days before DNA testing, that his blood type could not be determined from his semen. ![]() It was one hell of a favor to ask, but Veronica agreed immediately. Maybe even plant semen on the murdered girl. If she could just go to Bellingham and strangle a girl to make it look like the same man who killed Karen Mandic and Diane Wilder. He made a startling proposal - one that could, if successful, grant him the freedom to spend his life with her. Kenny saw opportunity in this relationship. Veronica fell in love with Kenny immediately. She wanted desperately to talk to him to understand better the mind of a murderer. She was supposedly writing a play called The Mutilated Cutter about a woman serial killer. As bizarre as Kenny's state of mind was, it did not compare with that of his creative girlfriend, Veronica Compton. ![]()
